Yesterday, Sunday the 27th of July 2008, I was greatly surprised and impressed while reading the Sunday edition of the daily newspaper “el Mundo”. I don’t know how to explain it exactly but the article about the nihil obstat of the Holy See so that Marta Obregón can reach the alters greatly caught my attention. To tell the truth, I just started to read out of curiosity because I taught it was some sort of story which, one way or another, ridiculed the Church. A good looking, attractive girl with exceptional qualities, who was on her way to the alters because she died struggling with her attacker who was trying to rape her? I have to confess, as I said before, that the thing was a bit morbid. However, as I read the article I realised that it told the story of a life with its ups and downs of a 22 year old young girl who experienced the love of God like we all should experience. She had dreams, ambitions, projects, etc…, the director of the centre of Opus Dei where she went to study knew it well. She was a girl of our times but with something more. She had found once more the love of God who never abandoned her and so as never to distance herself from God again she received spiritual direction from the priest of the centre.
If there is anything that I have written here that annoys or offends anyone, I ask their forgiveness, it’s not my intention to offend anyone its just that writing is not my strong point. My only wish is to point out that in the planes of God, although we may not understand them, Marta has given an example of chastity on a heroic level in a society where the only thing that matters is to have a good time, follow your instincts and do what ever you please; or at least that’s what they want us to think. According to what I have read, Marta was not like that. She had things straight, an admirable Christian formation and most of all she was someone in love. As is logic and normal she had a love on earth, but she also had a love with capital letters, her feet on the ground and her head in heaven; and like St. José María Escrívá said, she loved both God and creatures.
My name is Carlos D. I am a priest belonging to the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei. I belong to the diocese of Segorbe-Castellón and I have to confess that since I read that article I have not ceased to ask Marta to help us priests to live in love with God because that is the secret to live well chastity. In my case priestly celibacy is not a burden but is instead wings to fly very, very high.
Dear Marta:
I know that you are now enjoying the vision of God and His mercy. You have found what you always asked Him for, and now you rejoice in the plenitude of His love. Thank you for the testimony which you have left us. I know that you hear what we ask of you and that you look down at us from heaven with the same love and affection of God.
I carry the picture of your prayer card in my agenda and when I look at it I say “You were faithful, help us to be faithful.”
Castellón, 28 of Julio 2008.
